PHOENIX – The Northern Illinois University softball team split a pair of games on day one of the Lopes Up Classic at GCU Softball Stadium on Friday.
NIU (5-7) earned a 5-2 win over host Grand Canyon, after a suffering a 3-2 setback to Baylor in the first game of the day.
"Our pitching did an amazing job today keeping us in both games," NIU head coach
Christina Sutcliffe said. "We still have a couple areas of growth to work on, but our team is starting to hit our stride. I'm excited to finish out the weekend, rejoin the rest of our team, and start prepping for conference."
The Huskie bats came alive Friday, particularly in the victory over the Lopes. NIU pounded out seven hits, and took advantage of three Lopes errors, to win its second consecutive game over Grand Canyon. A four-run third proved to be the difference in the Huskies' victory.

Carley Goetschius drove in the first run with a single through the left side.

Kara Apato, who reached via an error, to give NIU a 2-1 advantage.
Kira Mickelson broke the game open for NIU. Mickelson reached on a fielder's choice and drove in Barone and Goetschius on a throwing error by the GCU second baseman.
Katie Keller added an insurance run on an RBI double down the right field line to drive in Apato, who reached on a two-out error.
Delaney Ostrowski picked up her first win of the season, going six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits.
Claire Norred earned her second save of the year, striking out the side in the top of the seventh.
The Huskies battled Baylor in the opening game of the day, but the last at bat proved to be key as the Bears hit a walk-off home run to right.
NIU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With runners at second and third with one out, Barone reached on an error to clear the bases. Baylor tied the game up with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Emily Dato and the Huskie defense kept it close. Dato went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks and stranded nine Bears on base, including three in the bottom of the sixth.
