ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team moved to 14-1 overall, 3-0 in Mid-American Conference matches, with a 6-1 victory over Buffalo on Friday afternoon (March 19) at Boylan Tennis Center. The Huskies won five singles matches, including four in straight sets, with Oliver Valentinsson and Mikael Vollbach each earning their 13th singles win of the season. 

"The guys did a great job today, we never let up from start to finish," said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. "I could not be prouder of our Huskies today, but we will see them again in a couple of weeks and Buffalo will be better."

In doubles, Bor Schweiger Muzar and Vollbach paired at number one and scored a victory over Matthew Johnson and Bjoern Petersen, 6-2. Kristopher Ortega and Valentinsson improved their doubles record as a tandem to 12-2, winning their fourth-straight match, 6-3, over Finn Macnamara and Tom Owen as the Huskies claimed the first point of the day.

Vollbach dropped just one game in his 6-0, 6-1 win over Owen at number six, maintaining his perfect 13-0 singles mark. At number one, Muzar lost just three games as he defeated Petersen, 6-2, 6-1. 

Mikko Malinen was a 7-5, 6-2 victor against Johnson at number two while Ortega captured a 6-2, 7-6 win over Macnamara, playing at number three. 

Valentinsson was the only Huskie to need three sets as he moved to 13-1 this spring, winning his ninth consecutive singles match, with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over Valdemar Holm.

NIU will return to action on Sunday, March 21, when the Huskies host Binghamton. The matchup with the Bearcats is scheduled for 12 p.m., outdoors at DeKalb High School.
