Women's Tennis | April 20
DeKALB, Ill. –
The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team continued to add to its list of Mid-American Conference weekly award winners in 2022 as the Huskies' No.1 doubles team of Fernanda Naves and Christy Robinson were named the MAC Doubles Team of the Week on Wednesday.
Naves (Veracruz, Mexico/Club Med Academies) and Robinson (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden Collegiate School) scored a 6-4 victory over Eastern Michigan's Vasavi Ganesan and Isabelle Popma to secure the doubles point for the Huskies en route to a 4-3 victory. The pair of seniors were moved into the No. 1 position due to injuries and had lost three straight matches before coming out with the win this past Saturday.
Their win helped NIU secure its 15th win of the season to guarantee a winning record on the year. The Huskies' 15 dual match wins in 2022 are the most for the program in 25 years, since the 1996-97 team went 15-9 while competing in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.
The honor is the third of the year for the Huskies as duo Erika Dimitriev and Anastasia Rakita previously were chosen twice as MAC Doubles Team of the Week on February 8 and 23. In addition to the three doubles honors, freshman Reagan Welch (Feb. 8) and sophomores Rakita (March 11) and Diana Lukyanova (Feb. 15) have received MAC Singles Player of the Week earlier this season.
This weekend NIU closes out its season at home with a pair of matches. The Huskies will take on Ball State on Friday, April 22, starting at 1:00 and Western Michigan on Sunday, April 24 at 11:30 a.m. at DeKalb High School (weather permitting) or the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House. Following the match on Sunday, the Huskies will honor their 2022 seniors.
