NIU Hosts First-Place Bowling Green Saturday

Huskies Open Doubleheader At Convocation Center Against Falcons

DeKALB, IL - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team closes out a stretch of four home games out of five on Saturday afternoon as the Huskies take on the Bowling Green Falcons at the NIU Convocation Center at 1 p.m.
 
The game is the first of a doubleheader with the NIU men's basketball team, who will take on Ball State at 3:30 p.m. For tickets to Saturday's game, as well as the rest of the 2022-23 season, log on to NIUHuskies.com or call the NIU Athletics Ticket Office at (815) 753-PACK (7225). General Admission tickets are $6 with reserved seats at $8. 
 
Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and locally on WDKB 94-9 FM as well as the NIU Huskies and Varsity Network apps.
 
NIU (10-8, 2-5 MAC) looks to get back in the win column after an 82-61 loss to Kent State Wednesday night. Senior guard Chelby Koker (Racine, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) led the Huskies with 21 points, her third consecutive game with at least 20 points. Koker was a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line. She is in the top-five in the Mid-American Conference in four different statistical categories, ranking fourth in both steals with 2.1 per game and in three-point percentage at 37.5 percent. Koker has made multiple three-pointers in each of the last nine games.
 
The Huskies are third in the MAC in three-pointers per game with 8.2. Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) is fifth in the league with 2.22 threes per game and sixth in three-point percentage at 34.8 percent. NIU got a lift from redshirt-sophomore guard Sidney McCrea (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) against Kent State Wednesday night. McCrea tied a season-high with three three-pointers and scored a season-high 12 points in 25 minutes off the bench.
 
Bowling Green (17-2, 6-1 MAC) enters Saturday's game tied with Ball State atop the MAC standings at 6-1. The Falcons won their sixth consecutive game Wednesday night 64-61 at Buffalo. Elissa Brett led Bowling Green with19 points and seven rebounds. Sophie Dziekan added 14 points and six rebounds off the bench. Brett is one of four Falcons averaging double-figure scoring at a team-high 13.1 points per game. As a team, the Falcons lead the MAC in scoring at 81.3 points per game. Bowling Green won both games against NIU last season, snapping the Huskies' seven-game winning streak in the series.
 
The Huskies go on the road for three of their next four games. NIU takes on Ball State on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Worthern Arena. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. CT.
