DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team has two duals on its slate as the team takes on Cal Baptist and No. 19 South Dakota State this Saturday in a tri match. The event, which is hosted by Cal Baptist, features nine ranked grapplers and will take place inside Van Dyne Gym in Riverside, Calif.
Although Saturday will be the first time the Huskies and Lancers (1-4) have met, NIU has dueled the Jackrabbits five separate times. SDSU (1-2) leads the all-time series 3-2 and won the most recent matchup in 2021 at Victor E. Court, 26-9. NIU's two wins came from
Anthony Gibson shutting out Kenny O`Neil 4-0 and
Brit Wilson logging a 5-2 win over Cade King.
The Huskies are coming off a solid performance at the prestigious 58th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships where NIU scored 40 team points and finished 13 out of the 46 teams participating.
Blake West and
Jaivon Jones made noise in their respective consolation brackets while
Izzak Olejnik finished fourth in the 165 division to pace NIU.
Cal Baptist most recently competed at the Reno Tournament of Champions where they finished seventh. As an individual, Peter Acciardi finished fourth in the 184-pound weight class to lead the Lancers.
South Dakota State recently took fifth out of 15 teams at the Soldier Salute in Coralville, Iowa. Cael Swensen was the 157 runner-up while Caleb Gross (141), Roman Rogotzke (184) and Luke Rasmussen (285) all took third in their respective weight classes
