DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team hosted its annual Red-Black Dual Friday night in the NIU Convocation Center. The Red team got out to a fast start, winning the first four matches to take the meet 26-13.
"Tonight was very competitive up and down the lineup," said head coach
Ryan Ludwig. "They fought each other really hard and that's what we ask of them. They know each other really well and competed hard and that led to some high-level wrestling tonight."
Kavan Troy (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) opened the night with a 4-1 win at 157 pounds over
Alec Rees (Sparta, Mich./Sparta), putting Red ahead 3-0.
Jake Stiles (Chicago, Ill./Montini Catholic) followed that up with another decision victory for the red team, defeating
Jake Evans (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) 7-3 at 165 pounds.
Michael Kaminski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and
Lucian Brink (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) battled to a 1-1 tie after regulation, but Kaminski helped put the red squad up 9-0 with a takedown of Brink in overtime.
Dylan Gvillo (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
Danny Curran (Carol Stream, Ill./DeKalb) also went to overtime at 141 pounds. Gvillo, who trailed 3-0 early, rallied to tie the bout 3-3 by earning the riding time point in the third period. He then took down Curran to give Red a 12-0 lead.
The Black squad got on the board with
Tommy Curran's (Carol Stream, Ill./DeKalb) 2-1 win over freshman
Collin Arch (Palmyra, Mo./Palmyra) in the longest bout of the night at 149 pounds. The two Huskies battled to a 1-1 tie through regulation, with neither wrestler scoring in the 2:00 sudden victory period. Curran earned an escape in the first tiebreaking period then kept Arch from doing the same to put three points on the board for the Black team.
"I think we have a high level of depth at 149," Ludwig said. "
Collin Arch is a true freshman and
Tommy Curran coming in as a transfer, not to mention
Jaivon Jones, there's a few things to sort out there. Those guys did very well tonight.
Brett Smith was really impressive at 157 performed really well tonight too and put up a whole lot of points."
Freshman
Brett Smith (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) scored 18 points in his technical fall win at 157 pounds, staking the Red team to a 17-3 lead. After
Hayden Pummel's (Indian Lake, Ohio/Indian Lake) 2-0 win at 174,
Matt Zuber (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) earned a bonus point win for the Black team with his 11-2 major decision victory at 184. The Black team won two of the final three bouts of the night, with heavyweight
Jacobi Jackson (St. Louis, Mo./Desmet Jesuit) winning 7-2 and redshirt-sophomore
Nathaniel Genobana (Centerville, Ill./Centerville) earning a 7-3 win at 125 pounds.
The Huskies open their 2023-24 season at the NIU Convocation Center on Friday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m., taking on Lindenwood and Saint Ambrose in the Huskie Duals.
