Women's Gymnastics | November 17

DeKalb, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University Gymnastics team competed in the annual Red / Black exhibition meet at Victor E. Court on Friday, November 17.

The Black Team won the meet overall by a score of 192.6 to 191.7 for the Red Team.

"I thought it went really well today, it was well attended and the girls were in midseason form in a lot of places," head coach Sam Morreale said.  We get to see gymnasts at many levels since we competed with so many gymnasts. I would rate today an 8 out of ten overall."

The Red-Black meet is the Huskies annual exhibition meet as the team prepares for the regular season in 2024. The Huskies regular season will open on January 6 with the Missouri Quad Meet against Missouri, Lindenwood and Southeast Missouri State.

Senior Alyssa Al-Ashari, an NCAA regional finalist in 2023 had the highest individual score on both the Bars and Beam.

Freshman Dawsyn Sallee, junior Isabella Sissi and sophomore Kiera O'Shea all tied at 9.9 on the beam.

Sallee competed for the first time at the collegiate level today and recorded a 9.9 on the vault.

Juniors Alana Anderson and 2023 NCAA regional finalist Emmalise Nock shined on the floor as they both scored a 9.9 overall.

"I think Isabella Sissi stood out today, she had a really good day," Morreale said. She's a junior all arounder who just missed going to regionals last year, this was a great start for her. Alyssa Al-Ashari did great today, she also added a third event today, she hasn't competed in floor in eight years before today."

Seven Huskies made their debut on Friday. Morreale thinks multiple freshmen fared well in their first contest for NIU.

"We had a few uncharacteristic errors that they don't normally have in practice, but this is their first collegiate meet. We have a group that will contribute this year, like Isabella Ross, Dawsyn Sallee and Mikayla Brown," Morreale said.
