Huskies Split Action at Boilermaker Duals

Three Huskies Go 2-0 on the Day

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.— Blake West (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee), Tommy Curran (Carol Stream, Ill/DeKalb), and Matt Zuber (Chicago, Ill/Fenwick) went 2-0 on the day as the Northern Illinois University Huskies wrestling program split action at the Boilermaker Duals, hosted by Purdue.
 
The Huskies opened the day with a victory over the University of Indianapolis  (UIndy), winning 32-12. The Huskies fell to host Purdue in the second dual of the day, 22-13.
 
With the win over UIndy, Ludwig earned his 96th win as the Huskies head coach.
 
"We are proud of the way the guys competed," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "We are making gains each week in pursuit of our ultimate goals."

West started the day off with a win over Nathan Smith, pinning Smith in the opening bout for the Huskies. Michael Kaminski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) defeated Noah Cantu of UIndy at 133 as the Huskies took an early lead. After dropping the match at 141, Curran got his first of two wins, defeating Jackson Hoover, with a win by fall.
 
Brett Smith (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) defeated Nathan Conley at 157 while Ricardo Salinas (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) got a 7-3 decision at 174. Zuber had his first technical fall victory of the season, defeating Aidan Petersen. Jordan Sommers (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) won the final match of the dual, a 5-2 decision over Jay Thompson of UIndy.

West claimed the first victory for the Huskies against Purdue's Ashton Jackson, recording his first major decision victory of the season (MD 8-0). The Boilermakers took the next two bouts, taking an 8-3 lead over the Huskies. Curran defeated Marcos Polanco in a 10-8 decision.
 
Trailing by two, the Huskies looked to get ahead but Purdue had other plans. The Boilermakers took the next three matches, extending their lead to 18-7. Zuber claimed victory over James Rowley (SV-1 5-2). The Huskies and Boilermakers split the final two bouts of the day. Ben Vanadia (Purdue) defeated Devonjae Hudson (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) in a major decision (MD 12-4). Jacobi Jackson (St. Louis, Mo./Desmet Jesuit) got the final victory of the day for the Huskies, a 7-3 decision over Tristan Ruhlman of Purdue.
 
The Huskies have a 12-day break from competition as they are set to return to the mat on Dec. 2 at the Cougar Clash in Edwardsville, Illinois. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m.
