Women's Soccer | December 6
CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Northern Illinois University women's soccer team had 11 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team as the conference made the announcement on Wednesday, December 6.
Seven of NIU's 11 Academic All-MAC honorees have previously earned the award, including graduate student
Abby McHugh (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda), who has a 3.911 grade point average and is working on a degree in Curriculum and Instruction. McHugh is earning her fourth consecutive Academic All-MAC recognition, having previously earned the honor in 2020-21, 2021 and 2022.
Four Huskies,
Abby Adams (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead),
Kierah Meier (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore),
Amara Thompkins (Racine, Wis./Indian Trail) and
Abby Zipse (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) have been named to the Academic All-MAC Team for the third team, each of the quartet earned Academic All-MAC recognition in 2021 and 2022.
Madison Frazer (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and
Sadie McGill (Fort Worth, Texas/L.D. Bell) both claimed their second Academic All-MAC award after also collecting the honor a season ago.
This season marks the first Academic All-MAC recognition for
Edith Delgado (Aurora, Ill./East Aurora),
Lea Gruennagel (Homburg, Germany/Intergrierte Gesamtschule Contwig),
Reegan Kingpavong (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) and
Aubrey Robertson (Fishers, Ind./Fishers). In addition to academic honors, Gruennagel and Robertson were both named to the All-MAC Second Team.
Frazer, Gruennagel, McHugh, Meier and Zipse also earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators earlier this fall.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
NIU finished the 2023 season with an 8-8-3 overall record and a 6-5-1 record in MAC play. NIU's eight overall victories were its most since 2017 and its six conference wins are the most for the program since 2007.
