Huskies Edged by Toledo

DEKALB, Ill. – Christopher Norlin and Mikael Vollbach each won their singles matches and the Northern Illinois University men's tennis team claimed the doubles point, but Toledo came from behind to capture a 4-3 victory over the Huskies on Friday afternoon (April 7). NIU falls to 12-8 on the season, 4-4 in league play, while Toledo improves to 13-5 overall, 5-2 in conference.

"Another close one that went all the way to the end today, unfortunately it didn't go our way," said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. "Holding our serve really held us back and that would be the telling stat for us today as to why it didn't go our way. We will need to fix this by Sunday against Ball State. No time to beat ourselves up over what happened today, we have to flip the page and keep going forward. I believe our guys will respond, these guys have character."

Iker Gaztambide Arrastia and Norlin combined for a 6-2 win over Matias Olivero and Luis Kleinschnitz while Vollbach and Cheng En Tsai scored a 7-5 victory against Pawit Sornlaksup and Krzysztof Wetoszka to give the Huskies the opening point of the afternoon.

Toledo put the first singles point on the board as Sornlaksup was victorious at number one, 6-2, 6-4, before Vollbach completed a straight sets victory at number three, 6-4, 7-6, over Adam Kovac to put the Huskies back in front.

The visitors won each of the next two matches to finish, earning a pair of three sets wins as Wetoszka outlasted Oliver Valentinsson, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, at number two and Marko Galic claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory against Iker Gaztambide Arrastia at number four.

NIU pulled back even with a straight sets win at number five as Norlin downed Olivero, 7-5, 6-1, but the Rockets picked up the overall win as Kleinschnitz came from behind to defeat Armin Koschtojan at number six, 5-7, 6-0, 6-1.
