DeKALB, Ill.  – Northern Illinois University Vice President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier announced that he and NIU Head Baseball Coach, Mike Kunigonis, have mutually agreed that Kunigonis' contract will not be renewed going forward and Kunigonis has been relieved of his head coaching responsibilities effective today, May 7, 2023. 
 
"I want to thank Coach Kunigonis for his commitment to NIU and his efforts to advance the Huskie baseball program over the last nine seasons," Frazier said. "In particular, I want to recognize his work in ensuring that Walt and Janice Owens Park, which opened in March of this year, became a reality. We wish him all the best in the future."
 
The search for a new head baseball coach will begin immediately.
 
"We will work hard and work quickly to find the best coach to move Huskie baseball forward," Frazier said.
 
Assistant coach Luke Stewart will lead the program through the remainder of the 2023 season.
