BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Reagan Welch (Greenbrier, Tenn. / Aaron Academy) and freshman Lucia Yecora (Seville, Spain / IES V Centenario School) shared the Flight 5 championship with straight-set wins over players from Indiana and Purdue, respectively, to lead a solid effort from the Northern Illinois University women's tennis team at the 2024 Hoosier Classic over the weekend in Bloomington.
 
Welch and Yecora combined to earn five of the Huskies' 10 singles wins on the weekend as the freshman added a win over Indiana to complete a 3-0 weekend in singles. 
 
Junior Isabella Righi (Palma de Mallorca, Spain / IES Centre de Tecnificacio Esportiva IB) teamed up with freshman Theodora Kousiou (Thessaloniki, Greece / Aristotelio College) to lead the way among the NIU doubles team as they reached the finals of the Flight 2 Doubles competition before falling to the Purdue duo of Ellie Morrow and Sophie Schwartz, 6-4, on Sunday.
 
NIU players claimed six doubles wins during the tournament with Jenna Horne (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) and Yecora scoring a victory over Indiana, while Righi and Kousiou's run to the final included wins over teams from Memphis and Ball State.
 
The Huskies took on players from Ball State, Eastern Michigan, North Texas and Memphis in addition to Purdue and Indiana over the weekend.
 
The next tournament on the schedule is the ITA Midwest Regional in Columbus, Ohio from October 10-14.
