WTEN24 - Diana Lukyanova MAC POTW

NIU's Lukyanova Named MAC Singles Player of the Week

Huskie Senior Helped Lead NIU to Three Wins

March 12

DeKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University senior Diana Lukyanova was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Week Tuesday after winning all three of her singles matches in dominating fashion last week.

Lukyanova's undefeated weekend in both singles and doubles helped the Huskies extend their winning streak to five straight matches with home victories over Lewis (5-2), Eastern Illinois (7-0) and St. Thomas (6-1) – all in the space of 32 hours on Friday and Saturday.

"Diana had an excellent weekend and was a key to our team's success in both singles and doubles," said NIU head coach Eric Burns. "She is playing very well at the moment, and we are really proud of how far she has come with her game this year."

A senior from Moscow, Russia, Lukyanova collected three straight set wins last week while improving her team-leading singles mark to 10-4 on the season. She gave up just three games to her opponents in the Lewis and St. Thomas matches.  Lukyanova also teamed with Isabella Righi to win three matches at No. 1 doubles, helping the Huskies claim the doubles point as she and Righi raised their record to 9-4.

Lukyanova is the first NIU singles player to earn the MAC weekly honor in 2024; she earned the award for the second time in her Huskie career, and for the first time since February 2022.  Two Huskie doubles teams, including Lukyanova and Righi (Feb. 13), have been named MAC Doubles Team of the Week this season.

NIU is 11-5 on the season as the Huskies open MAC play at Ball State on Sunday.
