NIU Softball Drops Defensive Battles to Akron

AKRON, Ohio— Battling the cold temperatures and having a defensive battle on the softball field, the Northern Illinois University Huskies softball team fell in Mid-American Conference (MAC) action to the University of Akron Zips in a doubleheader on Friday, March 22.

The Huskies and Zips went 11 innings in the first game as the Huskies fell 1-0 before falling 4-2 in the second game. With the losses, the Huskies drop to 7-17 on the season and 1-4 in MAC play.

Danielle Stewart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) faced off against Akron's Haley Croyle in the first game which turned out to be a pitchers' battle as extra innings would be needed. Stewart recorded seven strikeouts for the third consecutive game.

"It's hard when you are in both games and fall short of the goal," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "Dee Dee (Stewart) and (Emily) Dato had great outings for us in the circle. We have some corrections we need to make. We are going to watch some film and make sure we execute our game plan and play our style of ball."

Game One Recap (Akron 1, NIU 0 | 11 Innings)

Croyle of Akron was the first pitcher to give up any hits in the game, as Stewart and Ellis Erickson (Lutz, Fla./Freedom) were credited with back-to-back singles in the first inning. Avery Carnahan (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) added the third hit of the game for the Huskies in the second inning.

Akron got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth as the Zips and Huskies were in a defensive battle.

Between the fifth and seventh innings, the Huskies left three runners on base as they continued to find hits against Croyle.

In the bottom of the seventh, Stewart and the Huskie defense recorded a pair of strikeouts and saw an Akron batter foul out to left field to force extra innings.

The Huskies added two hits in extra innings as they looked to push a runner across home plate first. Kiley Conner (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) recorded the Huskies first hit in extra innings in the tenth inning. Erickson had the final hit of the game for the Huskies in the eleventh inning before being left stranded on base.

The Zips had a walk-off RBI single bunt in the bottom of the eleventh to win the game and hand NIU their third consecutive loss.

Game Two Recap (Akron 4, NIU 2)

After a pair of outs in the first inning, Erickson was the first Huskie to be credited with a hit. Erickson has entered the stat line with a hit for the fourth straight game.

Akron pushed the first run of the day across the board in the second inning, scoring on an RBI sacrifice fly. Akron added two runs to their lead in the third inning as they led NIU 3-0 heading into the fourth.

After starting the fourth inning with an out, the Huskies saw Katy Ramage (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora Township) and Carnahan hit reach base on singles. The duo had a double steal before Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) hit a 2 RBI single to left field for the Huskies first runs of the day.

Akron added their final run of the game in the fourth on an RBI single. The Akron pitching staff held NIU to just one hit, a single from Turner in the final inning.

Huskie Notes
  • Erickson was three of five at the plate in the first game of the day against the Zips as Conner was the only other Huskie to record multiple hits in the game.
