DeKALB, Ill.— Returning home for a non-conference dual, the Northern Illinois University Huskies wrestling program (2-1, 2-0 MAC) is set to host the Boilermakers of Purdue University on January 12. Action will begin at 2 p.m. inside the NIU Convocation Center with free admission.
Fans can follow action via
TrackWrestling or
ESPN+. Fans are encouraged to "Wear Black" and will get a rally towel upon arrival to the arena.
This will be the first meeting between the squads in DeKalb since the 2012-13 season.
Purdue's team features seven wrestlers that are ranked in the national polls, including the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds.
During the meeting last season,
Blake West (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) and
Tommy Curran (Carol Stream, Ill./DeKalb) were both victorious as Purdue claimed the 22-13 victory in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Rankings Check
West remains the top-ranked wrestler in the MAC Midseason Rankings for 125 pounds.
Other Huskies with top-5 rankings in the MAC include:
Markel Baker (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) sitting at No. 4 at 133 pounds,
Jacob Brya (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns) at No. 2 at 141 pounds, and
Spencer Mooberry (Osage, Iowa/Osage) sitting at No. 4 at 197 pounds.
There are five polls that have West ranked in this week's edition, with WrestleStat having the highest ranking at No. 13. Brya enters the rankings at No. 29 in the College Wrestling Report.
In the National Wrestling Coaches Association Mid-Major Poll, the Huskies enter the first poll of the season in a tie at 19.
Conference Honors
West was named Co-West Division Wrestler of the Week as announced by the Mid-American Conference on Tuesday (December 31).
West went 4-1 and defeated a pair of ranked opponents as he took second place at the 60th Midlands Championships.
