Women's Tennis | October 31
DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team hosted its final event of the fall in the NIU Huskie Indoor Invitational this weekend. The Huskies went 10-2 in doubles while
Rebeca Garcia Miralles and
Theodora Kousiou each won their singles flight.
Chicago State, IU Indy, Judson, Marquette and UIC all traveled to the Chick Evans Fieldhouse-Nelson Tennis Center for the three-day invite.
"It's a really good way for us to finish our fall season," said head coach
Eric Burns. "We were banged up this weekend and we fought through and made it through the tournament with good results. That's all we can really ask for."
In singles, NIU had three players reach the championship round in Garcia Miralles (flight three),
Malika Kabdesh (flight one) and Kousiou (flight two).
Sunday ended for the Huskies in exciting fashion as Kousiou faced UIC's Anais Brion and held on to win 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.
"She had an injury last year and has been working to get back to where her game was and I feel like this was a really big step for her," Burns said. "It's going to really help her and our team in the spring to have her playing with that confidence."
Garcia Miralles defeated Paula Rodriguez of UIC 7-5, 6-2 in flight three. Burns highlighted Garcia Miralles' improvement over the fall season.
"We hadn't seen the kind of competitiveness and fire she brought today. She was working really hard on the court and played really clean, good tennis today. Really proud of her," said Burns.
Kabdesh fell to UIC's Marta Halbersztadt 6-3, 6-4, finishing as the runner-up in flight one.
The Huskies shined in doubles, winning 10 of 12 matches between Friday and Saturday.
Irmak Budak and Kousiou swept the weekend as a duo, going 4-0.
Burns said the performance this weekend was the best the team has played in doubles in this fall.
"We were 10-2 in doubles and that's been a point of emphasis we've had, to be really aggressive, call out more poaches, not be so vanilla with what we're doing and it really paid off," said Burns.
With the fall season closed, NIU won't be in action until January when they travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Invitational from Jan. 9 - 11.
