NIU Hosts Milwaukee For Home Opener Friday Night

Huskies Look To Extend Home Opener Winning Streak

DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team starts a brief two-game homestand Friday night, hosting the Milwaukee Panthers in the home opener at 7 p.m. at the NIU Convocation Center.
 
Fans are encouraged to wear red for a Red Out as the Huskies play the first of three home games in the month of November. Season Tickets for the 2025-26 season start at $35 for general admission and $50 in reserved sections. Courtside seats and Nelson Suite access is also available. NIU (0-1) comes home after a 77-56 loss at Southern Miss in the MAC-SBC Challenge Monday night. Junior forward Nevaeh Wingate (Liverpool, N.Y./St. John's) led the Huskies with 17 points, making 7-of-10 shots from the field. She also had four rebounds and a team-high four assists and two blocks.
 
Freshman guard Emilie Sorensen (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee) became the first freshman since 2016 to start the season opener. Sorensen scored nine points and had three rebounds. She was 2-for-5 from the three-point arc. Reagan Barkema (Story City, Iowa/Bradley) was 2-for-4 from long range for six points off the bench.
 
The Huskies have won four consecutive home openers and eight of the last 10. Last season NIU erased an 11-point second half deficit to rally for a 57-55 win over Louisiana. NIU opened its 2016-17 home slate against Milwaukee, winning 114-104 in double overtime.
 
NIU leads the all-time series against Milwaukee 13-10 and has won three of the last four meetings. Milwaukee opened its season Monday night with a 59-55 loss to Loyola at the Klotsche Center. Junior forward Jorey Buwalda led the Panthers with a game-high 18 points and 14 rebounds. Milwaukee was picked to finish ninth in the Horizon League preseason coaches poll.
 
The Huskies are back in action at the Convocation Center on Tuesday, Nov. 11 to take on Western Illinois. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
