LAFAYETTE, LA—Partaking in a defensive battle, the Northern Illinois University Huskies (3-5) softball team fell in action to the Sam Houston State University Bearkats (4-5), 1-0 at the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational.
Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) and
Katy Ramage (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora Township) mark their third straight game with a hit.
"We had great pitching performances by Hannah and Taylor on the mount," said NIU head coach Kathryn Gleason. "We just need to make adjustments sooner at the plate to drive in our baserunners. We learn (from today) and get ready to play again tomorrow."
Turner had the first hit of the day for the Huskies, leading off with a single to left field. Ramage led the second inning off with a single through left field before a pair of Huskies would be stranded on bases.
Sam Houston threatened to score in the second, with runners on second and third. The Huskie defense held strong, collecting a pair of outs to end the inning.
Sam Houston put the lone run of the game up in the third inning, scoring on an RBI sacrifice fly.
NIU's defense allowed only three hits in the game, with two coming during the third inning.

- Ramage has been credited with a hit in all but the season-opener.
