Huskies Conclude Action in Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, LA—Concluding action at the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Invitational, the Northern Illinois University Huskies (3-6) fell to the University of Mississippi Rebels, 6-0.

The trio of hits by the Huskie offense were the fewest recorded this season.

"We had great pitching performances all weekend," said NIU head coach Kathryn Gleason. "We just need to pick up the ball and produce at the plate. It's a lot of little things to work on and improve. The score is not indicative of the way we played against a very good team. We've got a lot of depth on this team, and we were able to utilize that. We knew the first two weeks were going to be tough competition and we know Green Bay and Bellarmine will provide us great games next week."

Mia Morera (Simi Valley, Calif./Westlake) broke through the Rebels defense first, reaching on a walk in the third inning. Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) reached on a fielding error by the pitcher as the duo was left on base.

Madison Mathews (Yuma, Ariz./Cibola) reached base via an error by the Rebels defense as the Huskies were held without a hit through five innings.

Danielle Stewart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) had the first hit of the game for NIU, singling down the right-field line in the sixth inning. Mathews singled through the left side during the next at bat as the Huskies left two on.

Avery Carnahan (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) recorded her first hit of the season in the seventh as the Huskies got two on with no outs.

Ole Miss went on the scoreboard in the first inning, scoring on a wild pitch. The Rebels added to their lead in the third inning before scoring a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Huskie Highlights
  • Jaylyn Brister (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) made her debut for the Huskies in the sixth inning.
  • Alanah Velazquez (Pembroke Pins, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) made her season debut for the Huskies in the seventh inning,
  • Stewart issued two of the three strikeouts in the contest.

The Huskies return to action February 21-23 as they compete at the Bellarmine Tournament.  The Huskies will take on Green Bay at 12 p.m. CT on February 21.
