Huskies Comeback Falls Short Against Chippewas

DeKALB, Ill.—On the second day of Mid-American Conference action, the Northern Illinois University Huskies (7-14, 2-1 MAC) and the Central Michigan University Chippewas (8-15, 1-2 MAC) recorded a combined 25 hits in the final game of the series. The Chippewas scored eight runs in the first three innings as they went on to defeat the Huskies, 11-7.

The 10 hits from the NIU offense were the fourth time this season that the Huskies have recorded 10 or more hits in a game.

"We competed and battled all day and throughout the entire series," noted NIU head coach Kathryn Gleason. "Today, we just did not make the plays when we needed to make them and gave them additional opportunities at the plate. We continue to improve and grow each game and we will be better for the experience as we prepare for next weekend."

The Chippewas got on the board in the first inning, scoring three consecutive runs off four hits. The Chippewas added four runs in the second inning on four hits as they led the Huskies 7-1.

Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) singled for the first hit of the game for the Huskies before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Turner stole home for her fifth stolen base on the year to put the Huskies on the board in the first.

The first three batters of the third inning for the Huskies all recorded hits as Brianna Pechman (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago Community) scored on a Lia Nance (Oceanside, Calif/Oceanside) RBI double.

After a solo home run from the Chippewas in the third, the NIU defense allowed just three hits between the fourth and sixth innings as they held CMU from scoring.

Loading the bases in the fifth with no outs on the board, Madison Mathews (Yuma, Ariz./Cibola) hit a 2 RBI single to center field to send Pechman and Turner across the plate for the Huskies. Katy Ramage (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora Township) hit an RBI single in the infield as Nance scored the fifth run of the game for the Huskies.

Central Michigan saw their first batter be struck out to open the seventh inning before a two-run home run was sent flying into the outfield, hitting the fair pole. The Chippewas scored their final run of the game on an RBI double.

Danielle Stewart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) matched CMU in the seventh with a two-run home run of her own to send Mathews across the plate as the duo scored the final two runs of the game for the Huskies.

Huskie Highlights
  • Stewart's home run in the seventh was her second of the season.
  • Turner has scored in all five of the Huskies last games.
  • Pechman, Turner, and Mathews combine for six of the 10 hits from NIU.
