Champaign, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team closed out the regular season on Sunday with a road trip to the University of Illinois.
The Huskies were highlighted with a win on beam from
Mikayla Brown (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) with a 9.800.
"She knocked another routine out of the park," head coach Nita Teague said. "I thought it could have scored even better, but I was super proud of a nice, solid hit. She's been doing great the past couple meets and she's on a roll. She has a lot of confidence going into the MAC championships."
NIU saw top three performances from
Kiera O'Shea (Norridge, Ill./Ridgewood) and
Dawsyn Sallee (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) on vault with scores of 9.850. Brown then added another top three finish with a third place on floor with a score of 9.850.
"We started off rough, but then we finished strong," Teague said. "I was really proud of the team. We kept working and finished up with a good meet. We're extremely proud of Kiera (O'Shea) and Aliyah (Kelly) going one and two on all-around."
O'Shea also posted a 38.900 on the all-around to win the meet.
Aliyah Kelly (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) earned second place with a 38.850.
The Huskies scored a 193.475 overall as the Fighting Illini took the meet win with a 194.875.
Kelly led the way for NIU on the bars with a 9.775. Talia Kraus (Fairport, N.Y./Southern Connecticut State) added a 9.725 as the Huskies scored a 47.425 on the opening rotation.
O'Shea and Sallee both scored 9.800 and earned third place in the meet on vault.
Audrey Brenner (Fon du Lac, Wis./Fon du Lac) and
Jocelyn Harbeck (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) added scores of 9.725. NIU posted a 48.675 on the vault.
Brown led the way for NIU with a 9.850 on floor and earned third place in the dual.
Aliyah Kelly and
Alana Anderson (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) scored 9.725's as the Huskies posted a 48.725.
After Brown's win on beam NIU saw a 9.775 from O'Shea to earn fourth place and scores of 9.700 from Kelly and
Isabella Ross (Cary, N.C./Green Level). The Huskies earned a score of 48.600 on beam.
The Huskies closed out the regular season and will head to the MAC Championships at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 22 hosted by CMU.
