YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team finished second in the Golden Girls Classic held by Eastern Michigan on Saturday evening. The Huskies competed against Eastern Michigan and SUNY Brockport.
Eastern Michigan won the event scoring a 193.900, just ahead of NIU with a 193.200. SUNY Brockport finished with a 191.100.
"We had a much better start this week on bars with a very strong performance by
Elizabeth Poncin," head coach Nita Teague said. "We had a nice build from last week and we are looking forward to competing at home next week."
The Huskies were led by freshman
Alanah Wallace, who took home first and second place finishes, while sophomore
Drake White tied for first place on floor. White finished with a 38.600 all-around score, a career high.
Rotation one
NIU began on bars at the event and were led by freshman
Elizabeth Poncin, scoring a 9.750 and finishing in second in the event.
Rotation two
Junior
Mikayla Brown led the Huskies moving on to beam, earning a 9.725. Senior
Samantha Nickle was just behind Brown with a 9.625.
Rotation three
NIU had two gymnasts place on floor when White and Wallace tied for first place with a 9.800.
Rotation four
Wallace was the Huskies top scorer on vault as well, finishing with a 9.800 and taking second place.
"Alanah had a great meet and I love the energy she brings to the team," Teague said.

The Huskies home opener is a week from today, taking place on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. Admission to the NIU Convocation Center will be free.
