NIU Looks To Build On Season-High Shooting Performance In Win Over Western Michigan

DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team looks to build on one of it's best offensive performances of the season on Saturday when the Huskies head to Eastern Michigan to take on the Eagles. Tip-off at George Gervin GameAbove Center is set for 12 p.m. CT.

NIU (4-14, 2-5 MAC) shot a season-high 46.8 percent from the field Wednesday night in its 64-56 win over Western Michigan. The Huskies shot 61.5 percent in the third quarter, making 4-of-5 three-pointers, to take a 46-40 lead. NIU has shot 40 percent or better from the field in four of the last five games.
 
The Huskies have also outrebounded each of their last three opponents. NIU held a 36-24 rebound advantage over Western Michigan after outrebounding Ohio by 14, 44-30, on Jan. 17. Maria Serracanta (Sabadell, Spain/Mercer), Nevaeh Wingate (Liverpool, N.Y./St. John's) and Teresa Mbemba (Benguela, Angola/Presbyterian) combined for 23 of the Huskies' 36 rebounds Wednesday night.
 
Freshman guard Emilie Sorensen (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee) led all scorers with a season-high 22 points Wednesday night. Sorensen was 6-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-4 from long range, and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. She was also 6-for-8 from the field at Purdue Fort Wayne on Dec. 14 where she scored 17 points. Since Nov. 30, Sorensen's scoring average has gone up from 6.4 points per game to 8.5.
 
Eastern Michigan (8-9, 2-5 MAC) snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday night with a 76-71 win over Toledo. The Eagles trailed 71-70 with 0:53 and scored the last six points on Peyton Hill free throws to win the game. Hill led all scorers with a season-high 25 points. Fernanda Ovalle added 20 points as Sisi Eleko had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Eleko is second in the Mid-American Conference in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 17.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. As a team, the Eagles are third in the MAC in free throw percentage at 75.3 percent and fourth in field goal percentage at 43.2 percent.
