Huskies Close Homestand With Three Matches

NIU Coming Off 6-1 Win Over Roosevelt

DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team will host a trio of teams this weekend at the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House, closing out a seven-match homestand to open the dual season. The Huskies face Southern on Friday and will have a doubleheader against Omaha and Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday.

Admission to this weekend's matches is free.

NIU (3-1) defeated Roosevelt last Saturday 6-1, bouncing back from a narrow 4-3 loss to Xavier on Jan. 31. Senior Iker Gaztambide Arrastia and sophomore Nikola Puntaric recorded wins at No. 1 and No. 2 and are now a combined 7-0 in singles play.

Senior Iker Dellien Velasco notched his first win of the dual season against the Lakers.

The Opponents
NIU first takes on Southern at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13. The Jaguars are 0-4 this season and will travel to Chicago State on Saturday following their stop in DeKalb.

Omaha (1-5) recorded a 7-0 win over Midland on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Mavericks have played three matches against Big Ten teams early in the season, dropping a doubleheader to Nebraska and losing to Wisconsin on Feb. 1. Omaha will compete against MAC foe UIC on Saturday before facing NIU.

Wisconsin-Whitewater (4-2) has experience in close matches this season, which each of its last three finishing 4-3. The Warhawks have won two of the last three and have Carthage College on Friday, Feb. 13.
