ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Northern Illinois University baseball team dropped its series opener to the Lindenwood Lions 13-3 in seven innings Friday at Lou Brock Sports Complex.
"I really liked the way we played early," said head coach
Ryan Copeland. "Their starter was the [Ohio Valley Conference] Pitcher of the Year last year and we were all over the barrel. It was a tough day to hit with the wind howling in and it felt like we were going to break through if we could just keep them off the scoreboard."
Lindenwood (5-4) scored first in the bottom of the first inning. William Zareh reached base on an error with two outs. Jake Radosevic then hit a home run over the left field wall to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
NIU (4-4) responded in the top of the second. The Huskies loaded the bases with one out on base hits from
Caden Robertson (Magnolia, Texas/Central Oklahoma) and
Wyatt Wawro (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) and a walk to
Marcus Romero (Brighton, Okla./South Mountain College). After a strikeout for the second out,
Charlie Parcell (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) cleared the bases with a double to left field that put the Huskies in the lead 3-2.
Carter Cox (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) worked around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second to keep NIU in front, striking out Kam Edwards to end the inning. In the third the Huskies turned a double play and got another Cox strikeout to keep the 3-2 lead. The Lions tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Tyler Ellis drove in Charlie Isom-McCall with a two-out RBI double.
Lindenwood had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. W Geary drew a walk with one out, then stole second. Cox got Zareh to fly out for the second out. Geary stole third base which led to Radosevich being intentionally walked.
Gavin Micklinghoff (McHenry, Ill./McHenry County College) entered the game from the bullpen and got Filip Sarota to fly out to Parcell in centerfield to end the inning.
The Lions broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth, scoring eight runs on five hits to go up 11-3. Lindenwood added two runs in the seventh to complete the 13-3 victory.
Romero and
Ivan Dahlberg (Minooka, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) both had two hits in the game for the Huskies.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28 starting at 12 p.m.
