This Week in Huskie Athletics – Feb. 3, 2026

DEKALB, Ill. – NIU women's basketball, gymnastics, men's tennis and women's tennis will compete at home this week while the NIU men's basketball team travels to Georgia State in the MAC/Sun Belt Challenge and the Huskie wrestling team will also be in action this week in Huskie Athletics. 

Men's Basketball
Saturday, Feb. 7: at Georgia State, 1 p.m. – ESPN+ | Live Audio | Live Stats

The Huskies step out of conference play this Saturday as they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State in the second leg of this season's MAC/Sun Belt Challenge. In its first MAC/Sun Belt Challenge game this season, NIU scored a 102-82 victory over ULM as Jao Ituka led the way with 19 points and Gustav Winther added 18 points and 10 rebounds. This will be the second time in three seasons that the Huskies have played the Panthers in Atlanta, NIU defeated Georgia State, 70-64, on Nov. 17, 2023. 

Georgia State comes into the week with a 9-14 overall record, 6-5 in Sun Belt play, and will host Troy on Wednesday night before welcoming NIU to Atlanta. 

Women's Basketball

NIU women's basketball goes on the road on Wednesday night to take on Ball State at 5:30 p.m. The Huskies set season-highs on Saturday with 70 points, nine three-pointers and 17 assists against Central Michigan, along with shooting 51.0 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from the three-point line. The Huskies scored 26 points off of 27 Chippewas turnovers but could not overcome being out rebounded 42-17 in a 75-70 loss. 

Emilie Sorensen led the Huskies with 18 points against CMU, making 4-of-7 three-point attempts. Nadechka Laccen added 17 points, four assists and four steals. Both players played the full 40 minutes Saturday marking the first time since December 7, 2018, that NIU had two players play 40 regulation minutes. 

On Saturday NIU hosts Texas State for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The game is the second of this season's MAC-SBC Challenge. It is the second all-time meeting between the Huskies and Bobcats and first in almost 30 years. A full recap of both games this week will be available on NIUHuskies.com later this week. 

Gymnastics
Friday, Feb. 6: vs. Western Michigan, 6p.m. – ESPN+ | Live Stats

NIU gymnastics will host its third consecutive home meet this weekend against conference foe Western Michigan. The Huskies are coming off a 193.000-191.400 win over Wisconsin-La Crosse on Sunday, Feb. 1. Junior Mikayla Brown led NIU in two events, earning a score of 9.800 on both beam and floor. In total, NIU won three of the four routines in the meet. 

Western Michigan is coming off a first-place finish in a quad meet against Greenville University, Bowling Green and WIsconsin-Eau Claire. The Broncos have a team score average of 194.435. 

Wrestling
Friday, Feb. 6: at Buffalo, 5 p.m. – ESPN+ | Live Stats

The Huskie wrestling team continues their trip out east as they competed against Buffalo on Friday evening in Buffalo, New York. In last season's meeting, the Huskies posted a 28-8 victory inside the NU Convocation Center. The Huskies won the first seven bouts of the evening and had three bonus point wins in the match.
 
The Huskies dropped their first conference dual on Friday, January 30 as they fell 28-8 to the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven. Blake West, Markel Baker, and Devon Dawson who are all ranked in the national polls, picked up wins for the Huskies in the road loss.

Men's Tennis
Saturday, Feb. 7: vs. Roosevelt, 11 a.m.

The NIU men's tennis team is set to face Roosevelt this weekend at the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House. NIU is coming off a tough loss 4-3 to Xavier last Saturday. Iker Gaztambide Arrastia and Nikola Puntaric are 5-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles this season. 

Saturday will be the first dual season action for Roosevelt. The Lakers have a veteran roster with seven upperclassmen led by four seniors. 

Women's Tennis
Friday, Feb. 6: vs. North Dakota (in Cedar Falls, Iowa), 10 a.m.
Friday, Feb. 6: at Northern Iowa, 4 p.m. 
Sunday, Feb. 8: vs. Milwaukee, 1 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 8: vs. Judson, 6 p.m. 

Women's tennis has a four-match weekend coming up with doubleheaders on both Friday and Sunday. The Huskies will take on North Dakota in a neutral site match on Friday morning before facing host Northern Iowa in the evening. Turning to Sunday, NIU has an afternoon set against Milwaukee before closing the weekend on Sunday night vs. Judson. 

NIU went 1-1 last weekend, defeating Butler on Friday and losing to Minnesota on Saturday. Lucia Yecora is 5-2 in singles this season while Irmak Budak and Jenna Horne are 4-2. Budak was named MAC Singles Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 2, the third consecutive week the Huskies have been honored.
