DeKALB, IL – Sophomore
Carter Cox (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) of the Northern Illinois University baseball team was named the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday after setting career-highs in the Huskies' 6-0 win at UMass on Saturday.
Cox threw a career-high eight innings on Saturday, allowing zero runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out a career-high 12 batters, eight of which came in the first four innings. It was his second game this season with double-digit strikeouts. Cox had 10 strikeouts in five innings in NIU's season-opening win at North Carolina A&T. D1Baseball rated Cox's start on Saturday as the best pitching performance in the nation on that day.
This is the third time this season an NIU pitcher has been named the MAC Pitcher of the Week. Last week
Max Vaisvila (Villa Park, Ill./Wabash Valley College) was the MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week as well as the College Baseball Foundation and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Pitcher of the Week for his 14-strikeout, one-hit shutout of Bowling Green on March 28.
Danny Cihocki (Princeton, Ill./Lake Land College) earned the honor on Feb. 23 after striking out 10 Presbyterian batters in NIU's 3-1 win on Feb. 21.
NIU is the only team in the MAC to have multiple pitchers earn Pitcher of the Week this season.
The Huskies open a four-game homestand on Tuesday, April 7 at 3 p.m. against Eastern Illinois.
