GENEVA, Ohio—Brett Smith led members of the Northern Illinois University wrestling program as they competed at the U23 World Team Trials, Freestyle last weekend (May 30-31) at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Smith claimed a seventh place finish at 79 KG after defeating Ryan Ford (SKWC). Smith earned wins via decision over Sabine Portella (Tar Heel Wrestling Club), Maxwell Stein (Pennsylvania RTC), Zach Hanson (California RTC), Gunner Holland (Arkansas RTC) and a technical fall win over Ethan Barr (Golden One RTC).
Calvin Werden competed at 65 KG and claims wins over Riese Thornberry (Wisconsin) and Joshua Vasquez (Laker Wrestling Club).
Collin Arch, who wrestled at 70 KG, had back-to-back wins via technical fall over Dominic Ferraro (ERTC) and Jayce Paridon (Florida).
Tommy Bennett went 2-3 at 86 KG with all his matches reaching technical fall. Bennett claimed wins over Pierce White (Boone RTC) and Henry Downing (Built by Brunson Wrestling).
