Wrestlebacks - Round 3
149: No. 20 Mike Grimes (Northern Illinois) dec. No. 15 Doug Withstandley (Purdue), 4-3

Grimes Advances At NCAA Championships With 4-3 Win Over Purdue's Doug Withstandley

St. Louis, MO - Mike Grimes (Villa Park / Montini) scored a takedown with :11 seconds remaining to defeat Purdue's Doug Withstandley and remain alive at the 2005 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, MO.

The win was Grimes' second of the tournament after the Villa Park, IL, native earned a 14-8 victory over Boston University's Raves Gonzales late Thursday evening.

A pair of second-period escapes by the NIU sophomore straddled a Withstandley takedown to tie the match at 2-2. Withstandley then chose down and escaped midway through the third period to forge ahead 3-2, but Grimes kept the pressure on and took down the nation's No. 15-ranked 149-pounder to earn a 4-3 win and avenge a 5-0 loss to the Boilermaker junior back on Dec. 12, 2004.

Grimes returns to action later this afternoon when he faces off against Ben Cherrington of Boise State. Cherrington defeated Minnesota's Quincy Osborn to advance.
