Northern
Illinois Women's Soccer ties Illinois State 1-1 In Double OT Thriller
DeKalb, IL—
Northern Illinois University's women's soccer team relied on the
strong play of senior goalkeeper Carrie Dvorak (Granger, IN / Marian)
who snagged six saves for the Huskies en route to their 1-1 tie
Sunday (Sept. 18) with Illinois State University.
"We played
really well at times," commented head coach Marci Miller. "It
was a very up and down game with a lot of momentum shifts. That
is what happens when two good teams play each other."
NIU grabbed
an early lead when Ingrid Gonzalez (Des Plaines / Maine West) connected
on the first goal of her career in the 35th minute. Gonzalez scored
off a centering pass from Jenna Clausen (Racine, WI / Horlick) who
received the ball from Angeline Impelido (Glen Ellyn / Glenbard
South). The Huskies went into the half with a 1-0 lead.
The Redbirds
came out more aggressive in the second half, putting more pressure
on the Huskie's defense. NIU and ISU traded solid scoring opportunities
until Heather Forsyth scored for the Redbirds in the 84th minute
off a Shannon Duggan corner kick. Illinois State took eight shots
in the second half and forced Dvorak to elevate her level of play.
"She is
so solid," said Miller. "As a coach I can let her go out
there and play her position and know that she is going to do a great
job."
"I was able to block everything else out," Dvorak said.
"We played great defense this afternoon and our communication
was really good. We (the defensive unit) did a good job of keeping
goals out of the net."
Northern Illinois
returns to action at home on Friday (Sept. 23) when the Huskies
take on Bowling Green State University in the Mid-American Conference
season opener. Match time at Huskie Soccer Field is 4:00 P.M.
