LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Northern Illinois' first day of competition at the Cliff Keen Invitational was highlighted by Duke Burk and Pat Castillo as the duo advanced the furthest among the Huskie wrestlers in action on Friday.
Burk posted two wrestleback victories and a round of 32 win at 184 pounds, defeating Ohio's Nick Turbay 3-1, West Virginia's Chance Litton 6-1, and Wyoming's Preston Pavlich 11-3, and. In his round of 16 match, Burk dropped a 6-2 decision to Justin Barent of Columbia.
Castillo began the day by posting a pair of victories, topping Columbia's Brandon Kinney 6-4 in overtime in the round of 32 and Virginia's Ross Gitomu 7-4 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinal match, Castillo dropped a 6-4 decision to Angel Escobedo of Indiana.
Through the first day of results, the Huskies earned 26.5 team points, placing the 25th overall and second among MAC schools competing at the event.
