CHICAGO -The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team fell to the UIC Flames, 50-42, Sunday night at the UIC Pavilion.

The Huskies (2-4) got off to a slow start offensively, going 1-17 from the field through the first 12 and a half minutes of play. A three-pointer from Kylie York (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) with 1:48 left to play in the first half pulled the Huskies to within two, 17-15. The Huskies went 5-28 from the field shooting 17.9 percent in the first half to go into the break down 19-15.

"Kylie was suffering from the flu," NIU head coach Carol Owens said. "Despite her illness, she played really well for us. She was someone we felt like we needed on the court."

The Flames (3-2) shot 31 percent in the first half going 9-29 from the field. The Huskies outrebounded UIC 26-20 in the half, but lost the turnover battle 16-11. The Flames did the bulk of their scoring from the inside with 14 points coming from in the paint.

The Huskies fortunes from the floor didn't improve much in the second half. NIU opened the final frame going 3-15 in the first nine minutes. Three pointers by UIC's Jessica Miller and Ashley Tomzik pushed the Flames lead to 36-26 with 7:51 left to play.

Shari' Welton (Calumet City, Ill./Thornwood) scored five-straight points to cut the Huskie deficit to 38-33 with 3:16 left to play. That would be as close as the Huskies would get as UIC began to pull away and come away with the win.

Welton had nine points in the second half to finish with a game-high 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. York also finished in double digits with 10 points. Mauvolyene Adams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) had a solid game with eight points and six rebounds.

The Huskies grabbed a season high 61 rebounds. Both teams struggled offensively, with NIU shooting 23 percent for the game and the Flames shooting 28 percent.

"We missed too many lay ups, turned the ball over," Owens said. "Obviously we didn't play our best basketball."

The Huskies continue their road trip Wednesday night when NIU travels to Green Bay, Wis. to take on UW-Green Bay at 7 p.m.
