AMES, Iowa - Led by Carolyn Vasquez, Northern Illinois' track team took home three top-20 finishes over the weekend at the Iowa State Classic. Vasquez turned in a time of 1:26.90 in the 600-yard run, finishing as runner-up in her heat and eighth in the event.
In the throws competition, Ashley Morrow finished 19th in the weight throw with a distance of 17.11m/56-01.75 ft. Morrow then placed 21st in the shot put with a mark of 14.07m/46-02.00 ft., leading a trio of Huskies, including Margaret Gorski (25th) and Cora Caulfield (35th).
NIU's other top performance on the track came from Lorene Skipper, who placed 16th in the 800m race with a time of 2:11.59.
Other top Huskie finishers at the meet included: Megan Guenther (26th) in the weight throw, Jessica Statler (27th) in the high jump, Abi Wyatt (30th) in the 600-yard run, and Meghan Ginter (31st) in the 5000m.
Ginter and Denisse Valladeres set personal bests in the 5000m with times of 18:00 and 18:50 respectively.
"I'm very proud of our ladies, it was a very challenging meet and a lot of them were able to step up their performance and carry through with some great efforts," said head coach Connie Teaberry. "Over fifty teams competed at Iowa State, so we got to see some top notch competition with two weeks before the MAC tournament."
NIU is next in action on Friday, Feb. 16 when they travel to Muncie, Ind., for the Ball State Triangular.
