MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Arianna Calloway (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) of the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team became the first Huskie in program history to win the high jump title at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday (Feb. 28) at Central Michigan's Jack Skoog Indoor Track.
Calloway cleared the bar at 1.75 meters (5-08.75) to earn the conference crown; she finished second as a freshman in 2024 and fourth as a sophomore last year.
"We walk away from the MAC Championships with a champion in the high jump," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "Arianna (Calloway) has been saying since the spring, when she didn't get to complete the season, that she was claiming the top spot in high jump and she worked, believed and stuck with it and made it a reality. I'm extremely proud of her ability to make the big jumps when it counted. Jasmijn (Raes) had some great attempts throughout the competition, and I definitely see great things happening for her in the near future."
Calloway claimed the title by tiebreaker, having cleared 1.75m on her first attempt. Ball State's Nina Garner finished second after clearing 1.75m on her second try while Ella Garvin of Miami made the height on her third attempt.
Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherlands) finished fourth in the high jump as she cleared 1.72 meters (5-07.75) on her first try at the height.
Elsewhere,
Precious Umukoro (Villarreal, Spain) finished 12th in the triple jump with a mark of 11.91 meters (39-01.00), while
Aniya Barton (Lansing, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) was 13th with a personal best mark of 11.79 meters (38-08.25).
"We will keep grinding and outdoors will fare better teamwise," said Teaberry. "We have some athletes sitting at home that will definitely add to our score. Huskies don't give up and won't hold our heads down. We get back to work and continue to strive to make things happen. I'm proud of the athletes competing but they know they have more and it's up to the staff to help them believe in themselves."
NIU will now turn its attention to the outdoor season, which will begin on Saturday, March 28, at the Redbird Challenge, in Normal, Ill.
