DeKalb, Ill. --- For former Northern Illinois University wrestler T. C. Dantzler---and with apologies to the oft-quoted Yogi Berra, it's hall of fame deja vu all over again.
The two-sport Huskie standout (football in 1991 and wrestling in 1989-93) will be one of 14 "outstanding contributors to the sport" enshrined into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame in ceremonies at the Park Place of Countryside this Saturday (April 21).
For Dantzler (Harvey / South Holland Thornwood), the IWCOA honor represents his second such hall of fame enshrinement. In 2004, he was inducted into the Northern Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame.
By coincidence, the IWCOA banquet comes two weeks after Dantzler captured his second United States National Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship. Now representing the Gator Wrestling Club and based in Colorado Springs, CO, Dantzler decisioned Keith Sieracki, 2-1, 1-1, in the 163-pound finals on April 7 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV, and qualified for the 2007 U. S. World Team Trials, also in Las Vegas, on June 9-10.
Obviously, Dantzler would love a strong performance at the 2007 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, and prepare for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
"T. C. is one of the top athletes in the country," said current Northern Illinois head wrestling coach Dave Grant. "The IWCOA Hall of Fame certainly is a prestigious honor for him, our program, and our institution."
In 2006, Dantzler not only captured his first U. S. National title, but added his finest moment on the international Greco-Roman stage by placing fifth at 163 pounds at the World Championships in Guangzhou, China.
A participant in the U. S. Olympic Trials (1996, 2000, 2004) and the Pan American Games (2003), Dantzler participated in the National Collegiate Athletic Association championships for four consecutive years (1990-93) and produced an 81-34-1-12 won-lost-draw-pin career record for Huskie head coaches Ed Vatch and Phil Rembert. At Thornwood High School, Dantzler earned 10 varsity letters in four sports---football (4), wrestling (4), track (1), and baseball (1).
