DEKALB, Ill.-The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team snapped its five-game home winning streak when it fell to Eastern Michigan, 64-57, Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.

Down 28-20 at the break, the Huskies (10-15, 6-6) made a charge to open the second half. Northern Illinois went on a 13-3 run during a three-minute stretch to tie the game at 35 with 16:12 left to play. That would be as close as the Huskies would get the rest of the contest. The two teams went scoreless for the next two minutes. The Eagles (16-11, 10-5) then went on an 11-3 run to take a 46-38 lead with 10:25 left to play.

After falling behind by 10 with 7:41 left to play, the Huskies did close the gap to three, 51-48 with 5:59 left to play, after going on an 8-3 run. A three pointer by Eastern Michigan's Canea Williams turned things around for the Eagles and EMU began to pull away.

"We're disappointed we didn't get the win. In the first half I felt we played really good defense," NIU head coach Carol Owens said. " We were 1-of-10 from three-point territory in the first half with their team playing zone. You've got to hit threes in that situation and we weren't. But we made a couple of runs and tied it. It was at 35 for a while, but we couldn't convert. We could not convert and you have to do that."

The Eagles had three players finish in double figures with Colleen Russell leading all scorers with 25 points. Whitney Lowe (Bushnell, Ill./Prairie City) was the lone Huskie in double figures, finishing with a team-high 16 points. Shari' Welton (Calumet City, Ill./Thornwood) and Jessie Wilcox (Oshkosh, Wis./West) each added seven points.

The Huskies won the turnover battle, 17-20, but were outrebounded 39-32. The Eagles converted those boards into 13 second-chance points. The Eagles outshot NIU 44.7 percent to 36.2 percent.

NIU will be home again Monday, March 3, 2008 when the Huskies play host to Ohio University. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center. Fans can follow all the action with Bill Baker on 1360-AM WLBK.
