SARATOGA, Calif. - The Northern Illinois softball team lost its doubleheader with Santa Clara, losing the first game, 5-3 and the second, 3-2, Wednesday at the WVC Softball Complex.
NIU (3-13) jumped on top early in game 1. Northern Illinois scored the first run of the game when Kayla Kramer (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago) scored on an Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) single. Carly Norton (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) delivered a two-run homer to give NIU a 3-0 lead.
However, with the Huskies leading 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, NIU surrendered a three-run sixth to the Broncos costing the Huskies the victory. NIU struggled defensively in the first game, committing three errors.
"We got out played and beat ourselves," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said.
The Huskies didn't fare much better in the second game. Again, NIU scored first when Jenna Roberts (Verona, Wis./West) singled and proceeded to steal second and third base. She scored on an error by the catcher, giving Northern a 1-0 lead.
Santa Clara responded, scoring a run in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 advantage. The Huskies pulled to within a run in the top of the sixth when Dani Parrish (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) scored on an Emily Gooding (Lismore, Australia/Lake Land C.C.) single. That would be as close as NIU would get, going down in order in its last at bat.
Gooding went 2-for-3 with a RBI in the second game, while Roberts was 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored in game 2.
The Huskies end their West Coast trip Thursday when NIU faces St. Mary's College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CST.
