MORGANA, Calif. - The Northern Illinois softball team closed out its trip to California with a split against St. Mary's (CA), defeating the Gaels, 6-3, in the first game and falling 2-0 in the second Thursday at Contrell Field.

"It was nice to see our offense come back and attack at the end of the first game," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "We didn't really get any offensive production in the second game."

NIU (4-14) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first game with a run in the second and two in the fourth. After St. Mary's (CA) (8-12) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3, Northern Illinois responded with a big three-run sixth. The first two Huskie batters reached when Jenna Roberts (Verona, Wis./West) got things started by coaxing a lead-off walk and Dani Thompson (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon) singled to left field. Krista Matsui (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing the runners up a base.

Roberts scored on a single by Kayla Kramer (West Chicago, Ill/West Chicago) and Thompson came in for the second run of the inning on an infield single by Katie Colby (Waukesha, Wis./West). Bailey Ouellette (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton) drove in her seventh run of the season when Kramer came in to score on her infield hit.

The Huskie offense, which had been scuffling on the road trip, came alive in game one, scoring six runs on 12 hits. Kramer had a solid day at the plate in the first game, going 2-for-5 with three runs batted in and a run scored, while Ouellette went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Emily Gooding (Lismore, Australia/Lake Land C.C.) also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Joreigh Landers (Vernonia, Ore.Vernonia) (2-3) posted her second victory of the season, limiting St. Mary's to three runs, two earned, on 11 hits, while striking out five.

The Huskies' offense struggled in the second game, however, getting shutout on just five hits. St. Mary's did all its damage in the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits. NIU's best scoring chance came in the top of the sixth when the Huskies had runners at the corners with two outs, but Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) flied out to left to end the threat. Colosimo (0-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits.

Northern Illinois is back on the field Mar. 18, 2009 when the Huskies take on Loyola-Chicago in the home opener. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Mary M. Bell Field.
