FRESNO, Calif. -The Northern Illinois University softball team lost its first two games of the Bayer Cropscience Classic hosted by Fresno State Friday.
The Huskies (2-7) lost their first game of the day to No. 10 California, 8-1, and dropped the nightcap to BYU, 11-0.
In NIU's game with the Golden Bears, the Huskies fell behind 4-0 in the first inning due to three costly Huskie errors. NIU scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the inning when Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) drove in Bailey Ouellette (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton) from second base on a two out single to center field. Cal scored three runs in the second and another in the fourth en route to the victory.
"We obviously didn't come ready to play," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "The errors in the first inning of our game with Cal set the tone for the day. We're going to have to get back to work to get better."
The Huskies didn't fare any better in the second game of the day. NIU's offense struggled to get anything going, mustering four hits, while allowing two big innings for the Cougars. BYU posted a three-run fifth and scored five in the sixth.
The Huskies return to the diamond tomorrow when NIU takes on BYU at noon and host No. 24 Fresno State at 7 p.m. CST.
