FRESNO, Calif. - The Northern Illinois University softball team bats were silenced on the second day of the Bayer Cropscience Classic hosted by Fresno State as NIU lost both games Saturday.
After being shutout by BYU yesterday, the Huskies (2-9) were looking for a little redemption when they faced Cougars in the first game of the day. However, Northern Illinois was once again unable to contain the BYU offense as NIU lost to BYU, 10-1. The Huskies' lone run of the game was scored in the top of the fourth.
The Huskies faced host No. 24 Fresno State in the second game of the day. NIU had a little better showing against the Bulldogs. Down 1-0 heading into the top of the third, the Huskies tied the game in when Krista Matsui (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) from third on a sacrifice bunt by Jenna Roberts (Verona, Wis./West)
The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the sixth to secure the victory.
"It was a well-fought game until the last inning," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "The team is learning the woes of playing on the road for the first month of the season.."
The Huskies conclude play in the Bayer Cropscience Classic hosted by Fresno State Sunday when NIU faces Providence at noon CST.
