DEKALB, Ill. - A four-run fourth by the Fighting Irish proved too much to overcome as the Northern Illinois University softball team fell to Notre Dame, 11-4, Wednesday afternoon at Melissa Cook Stadium.

"Jenna [Roberts] had a great day," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "She made a diving catch with the bases loaded and had a hit to tie the game. Ashley [Cann] had a big pinch-hit double coming off the bench. We had a couple different people step up today, we just need to be a little more consistent throughout the line up."

Notre Dame jumped on top early with two runs in the first inning. NIU (9-18, 4-0) came back with a run in the top of the third when Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) drove in Zoe Sinner (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) from second on an error by the shortstop.

The Huskies took the lead in the top of the fourth. Down 2-1 with two on and two out, Jenna Roberts (Verona, Wis./West) singled down the right field line, driving in Dani Thompson (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon) from third to tie the game at 2-2. Ashley Cann (Glenwood, Ill./Marian Catholic), who came in to pinch hit for Colosimo, doubled down the left field line, scoring Sinner and Roberts and giving NIU a 4-2 lead.

Unfortunately for NIU, the lead would be short lived. Joreigh Landers (Vernonia, Ore./Vernonia), who came in to pitch in relief for starter Morgan Bittner (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly), allowed four runs in the bottom of the fourth to give the Irish a 6-4 lead. Notre Dame pulled away in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs in the inning.

Bittner turned in a solid performance, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks. Landers suffered the loss, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits and three base on balls.

Roberts went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Sinner showed patience at the plate, coaxing three walks and scoring two runs.

The Huskies return to the diamond Friday afternoon when NIU opens a four-game homestand with a doubleheader against Toledo. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Fans can follow all the action live online via GameTracker and will be broadcast on Internet radio with Bill Baker on the call only through Huskie All-Access on www.niuhuskies.com.
