Huskies Fall Short on Road Test

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Senior Kylie York scored a season-best 23 points, and sophomore Sarah Rogers added a career-high 13, but the Northern Illinois women's basketball team lost a 72-63 road contest to Eastern Michigan, Saturday.

Northern Illinois fell to 7-9 on the season, with a 1-3 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Eagles improved to 13-3 and 3-1 in the MAC.

The Huskies led by as many as 13 points in the first half. York (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) scored 11 of NIU's first 14 points, and Marke Freeman (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) hit a three-pointer with 7:51 left in the first half to put her team on top 29-16.

Eastern Michigan countered with a 15-3 run to close out the first half and get within one point as the teams hit the locker room. Eagle guard Tavelyn James, the leading scorer in the Mid-American Conference, scored 10 of her 18 first-half points during the run and finished the day with a game-high 29 points.

The Huskies hit six three-pointers over the first 20 minutes, and connected on 54.5 percent (6-of-11) of their tries from downtown. From the field, NIU hit 34.4 percent (11-of-32), led by York who hit 5-of-8 shots for 14 points. Freeman was also a big contributor in the first, totaling 11 points and four rebounds. Freeman would finish the night with 17 points and tied for the team-high with eight boards.

Eastern Michigan took the lead off the bat in the second on a jumper by Cassie Schrock, accounting for two of her 17 points. The score see-sawed with NIU seeing its final lead on a shot by Freeman with 14:14 remaining. From there, EMU went on an extended 18-8 run that left the Eagles up 60-51.

NIU responded as York and Rogers (Chicago, Ill./Marshall) each scored four points as part of an 8-2 run that saw the Huskies get within two points. But the Eagles held on for the win at home by scoring the game's next eight points.

Junior Mauvolyene Adams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) played a limited role due to foul trouble, but still managed eight points, eight rebounds and three assists. EMU's Paige Redditt joined James and Schrock in double figures for the Eagles with 10 points, and added eight rebounds.

Northern Illinois returns home, Jan. 20, to close out its first tour of the MAC West Division against Central Michigan. NIU will then host Buffalo, Jan. 23, finishing a series of four home contests in five games.
