CHICAGO - Sophomore
Kim Davis scored a career-high 18 points, as the Northern Illinois women's basketball team fell 72-52 to No. 24 DePaul, Saturday at McGrath Arena.
Davis' inspired play also included eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. She shot 5-of-9 from the field, and connected on 8-of-11 free throws in 31 minutes.
"Kim played a great game; she hustled and scrapped and fought," NIU head coach Kathi Bennett said. "She did a great job on the defensive end as well as the offensive end."
"We played hard the whole game," Bennett said. "We saw where we are weak, where we need to get better and now it's up to us to get better."
The Huskies fell to 5-4 with the loss, while DePaul improved to 11-1 heading into a Chicagoland showdown with 8-1 Northwestern.
Northern Illinois trailed by 24 points early three-and-a-half minutes into the second half, but chipped away at the lead over the next 10 minutes. Davis scored five straight points to cut the lead to 13 with 6:16 left, but DePaul scored the game's next 10 points to put the Huskies away.
The game was tight early on, with three ties in the first six minutes. NIU tied it at nine on a lay-up by Marke Freeman, who finished the night with 11 points. DePaul answered with back-to-back three-pointers by Keisha Hampton and Katherine Harry to take a six point lead. The Blue Demons hit five more three-pointers in the half to enter the locker room with a 40-22 lead.
NIU shot 45 percent in the opening half, but committed 10 turnovers resulting in 15 DePaul points. The Blue Demons went 14-of-29 from the field (48.3 percent), including a 7-of-13 tally on three-pointers. DePaul finished the game with 28 points off turnovers, but outscored the Huskies by only two in the second half, 32-30. NIU held DePaul to 0-of-7 shooting on three-pointers in the second.
"We did a great job in the second half guarding the three-point line, making that adjustment," Bennett said. "If we could've done that in the first half, it could have been a little different."
Davis' eight rebounds led NIU, while Shaakira Haywood added six boards. DePaul was led in scoring by Sam Quigley, who hit 10-of-11 free throws en route to 13 points. Deanna Ortiz added 12 points, all on three-pointers. Keisha Hampton had 11, while Felicia Chester and Katherine Harry contributed 10 each.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday for a noon tip-off at Northwestern, a team receiving votes in the top-25.
