SAN DIEGO - The Northern Illinois University softball team broke out of its scoring drought in a big way in game two of a doubleheader with San Diego Wednesday evening, defeating the Toreros, 7-1 at the University of San Diego Softball Complex.

"The offense did what we needed them to do," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "We saw some power there. The second game was a much better came."

Northern Illinois (2-10), which has been shutout in its last two games, scored its seven runs on 10 hits with three Huskies finishing with multi-hit games. NIU was aggressive early, scoring a run in the second on freshman Monica Segura's (Santa Ana, Calif./Segerstrom Fundamental) first collegiate home run. A two-run double by Michelle Williams (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) in the third allowed the Huskies to take a 3-0 lead.

Junior Zoe Sinner (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) extended the Huskies lead to 4-1 when she belted her first career homer over the center field in the top of the fifth, while a triple by Adriana Sanchez (San Fernando, Calif./Alemany) in the sixth drove in another run. NIU was able to tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh to cap the scoring barrage.

While the offense was impressive, the Huskie pitching staff turned in its best outing of the year. Whitney Owens (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) picked up her first career victory, allowing one run on three hits and seven walks in five innings of work. Segura came in to pitch the final two frames, allowing two hits and a walk.

"Whitney did a really good job from the mound," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "She has the intangibles to help her progress and get better.

"Monica did a great job today. She had a couple hits at the plate and threw four scoreless innings. That's what we need her to do."

The Huskies return to action Friday when the Huskies head to Riverside, Calf. to participate in the Amy S. Harrison Classic. NIU will open the tournament with Harvard at 4 p.m. Central Time. Northern Illinois will take on Idaho State and the Crimson at 1:30 and 4 p.m. respectively Saturday before closing out their West coast trip Sunday when it faces UC-Riverside at 11 a.m.
