NIU Head Coach Jerry Kill
Jerry Kill enters his third season at Northern Illinois in 2010 and is in his 17th season as a collegiate head coach at four different universities. The Kansas native has led the Huskies to back-to-back bowl games, its first win over a Big Ten team in 21 years and a 14-14 record. Kill's 118-71-0 record as a head coach is good for a winning percentage of .624. Prior to NIU, he spent 14 years as head coach of programs at Saginaw Valley State (1994-98), Emporia State (1999-2000) and Southern Illinois (2001-07).

In his first stint as a collegiate head coach at Saginaw Valley State...
(Mich.) from 1994-98, his teams posted five consecutive winning seasons, a 38-14 overall record and were nationally-ranked in each of his final two years. After two seasons at Emporia State (Kans.), he moved on to Southern Illinois, where he led the Salukis to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs five times, including a trip to the FCS semifinals in 2007.

Southern Illinois went 55-32 during Kill's seven seasons at the helm. He was named the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year in 2004 following a 10-2 campaign, and won the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award in 2007 while leading SIU to a 12-2 record. Southern Illinois spent 64 straight weeks in the Top 20 between 2003 and 2007 and was ranked in the Top 10 for 12 consecutive weeks in 2007.

Kill began his collegiate coaching career at Kansas powerhouse Pittsburg State, beginning in 1985 with three seasons as the defensive coordinator. After spending the 1988 and '89 campaigns as the head coach at Webb City High School where the team won the 1989 state championship, he returned to PSU as offensive coordinator for the then NCAA Division II team. He picked up another championship as the Gorillas won the title in 1991 with a 13-1-1 record.

The Northern Illinois football program has achieved academically under Kill. In his two seasons at NIU, 50 football student-athletes have earned their degrees and the football team's most recent Academic Progress Rate of 975 ranks the Huskies 10th of all Division I schools in the country in eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes.

NIU News and Notes
September Swing
After picking up a victory over North Dakota last weekend in its only September home game, Northern Illinois begins a three-game road swing with a short trip "downstate" to Urbana-Champaign for an 11 a.m. Big Ten Network match-up versus the University of Illinois. Northern Illinois will play four of its first five games this season on the road.

Short Series
Although Northern Illinois and Illinois are located just 170 miles apart, the two teams will meet for only the fourth time ever and for the first time since 2001. UI has won each of the three previous meetings, all played in Champaign, defeating NIU 30-14 in 1992, 34-10 in 1994 and 17-12 in 2001.

On the Road
The 2010 Huskies play four of their first five games on the road, and begin a stretch of three consecutive road games versus the Fighting Illini. Under Head Coach Jerry Kill, Northern Illinois is 4-9 in road games since 2008, with six of the losses coming by nine points or less, including decisions at Minnesota, Tennessee (both in 2008) and Wisconsin (in 2009). Following the Illinois game, the Huskies travel to Minneapolis to play Minnesota (Sept. 25) and then open conference play Oct. 2 at Akron. NIU's next home game is Oct. 9 versus Temple.

A Different Day
In the last meeting between these teams, on Sept. 8, 2001, Northern Illinois took a 6-3 lead into the fourth quarter on the strength of two Steve Azar field goals, including a 50-yard effort. Illinois responded with a pair of Kurt Kittner touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to take a 17-6 lead before NIU scored on a 26-yard pass from Chris Finlen to Darrell Hill with 1:12 remaining to cut the lead to 17-12. Following the score, the Huskies recovered Azar's onside kick but could not advance the football. Thomas Hammock gained 111 yards on 23 carries for the Huskies while Kittner completed 14-of-34 passes for 241 yards and Brandon Lloyd caught seven passes for 126 yards on the day.

The Coach's Credentials
Jerry Kill is the only Northern Illinois coach to lead the Huskies to back-to-back bowl games in the "major college" era (since 1969) with trips to the Independence Bowl in 2008 and the International Bowl last season. Kill has posted a 14-14 record in two years at NIU, highlighted by the bowl trips and Northern Illinois' 28-21 victory over Purdue a year ago, NIU's second win over a Big Ten team all-time and the school's first Big Ten victory in 21 seasons.

Last Week
Northern Illinois earned its first win of 2010 with a 23-17 decision over North Dakota on Sept. 11 at Huskie Stadium. NIU got 318 yards on the ground from the duo of quarterback Chandler Harnish (21 carries for 178 yards) and tailback Chad Spann (21 carries for 140 yards) with Harnish scoring on a 40-yard touchdown run to provide the decisive score in the fourth quarter. The Huskies amassed 510 yards of total offense but had a field goal and a punt blocked and saw another drive stall inside the 10-yard line. The Fighting Sioux scored on a 63-yard interception return and on an 85-yard touchdown pass and were not finished until Tommy Davis intercepted ND's last pass of the game as time expired.

Battling the Big Ten
Saturday's game versus Illinois will be the Huskies' 35th contest against an opponent from the Big Ten Conference. NIU has played 10 different Big Ten teams all-time and will play two Big Ten teams in 2010 after facing a pair of the league's teams a year ago, losing to Wisconsin (28-20) and defeating Purdue (28-21). Northern Illinois has claimed two wins and one tie versus the Big Ten, with a 19-17 victory over Wisconsin in 1988 and a 16-16 tie at Northwestern in 1987 to go with last year's Purdue result. The only current Big Ten team Northern Illinois has never faced is Michigan State with more games against Wisconsin (12) than any other league team.

1,011/502
The Illinois game will be the 1,012th game in Northern Illinois history and the Huskies will be looking for their 503rd victory all-time. NIU played its 1,000th game and won its 500th, last season and has a 502-458-51 all-time record for a winning percentage of .522. Over the last decade (2000-09), Northern Illinois posted a 68-53 record (.562) with eight winning campaigns.

Non-Conference Slate
NIU will open the 2010 regular season with four straight non-conference games before beginning MAC play Oct. 2 at Akron. Following Saturday's game at Illinois, the Huskies play their final non-conference game of 2010 at Minnesota on Sept. 25. Under Jerry Kill, NIU is 4-6 in non-conference games with three of the losses by four points or less.

Coaching Continuity
One secret to Kill's success has been the continuity on his coaching staff. His two coordinators - Tracy Claeys on defense and Matt Limegrover on offense - have been with Kill for 14 and 10 years, respectively, and the nine full-time assistant coaches average nine years on Kill's staff. Add Director of Sports Performance Eric Klein, who qualifies as Kill's longest-tenured assistant as they have been together for 15 years at four schools, and the average jumps to 9.7. Kill brought seven of his assistant coaches and Klein with him from Southern Illinois, with defensive line coach Jeff Phelps now the only holdover from Joe Novak's staff.

Coach Z
With his track record of keeping coaches, Kill was thrilled to be able to bring Division III Offensive Coordinator of the Year Jim Zebrowski on board as the Huskies' quarterbacks coach when an opening came up on the staff last February. Zebrowski, who most recently won a pair of NCAA Division III national championships as the offensive coordinator at Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Kill have known each other since the latter arrived at Southern Illinois, although Zebrowski left the school before Kill arrived. With Zebrowski's arrival as quarterbacks coach, Pat Poore has moved over to tutor the NIU wide receivers in 2010.

Familiar Faces
Former Northern Illinois head coach Joe Novak and his wife, Carole, are expected to be in attendance at Saturday's game. Novak, who retired from NIU following the 2007 season after leading the Huskie program for 12 years and amassing 63 victories, has attended several NIU games every year since leaving DeKalb. Novak helped bring Jerry Kill to Northern Illinois as his successor and remains close to the current NIU head man. Novak also spent the 1977-79 seasons on the staff at Illinois as defensive line coach.

Familiar Face II
Illinois running backs coach DeAndre Smith spent four seasons on the Northern Illinois sidelines as an assistant coach for Joe Novak from 2001-04, and was actually coaching the Huskie running backs the last time NIU and Illinois played in 2001. During his time in DeKalb, Smith worked with Huskie greats and current NFL running backs Michael Turner and Garrett Wolfe, as well as 1,000-yard rusher Thomas Hammock. The Huskies' string of nine-straight seasons with a 1,000-yard back encompassed each of Smith's seasons at NIU.

Leading the Way
The Huskies current 1,000-yard runner is senior tailback Chad Spann, one of 49 candidates for the 2010 Doak Walker Award. A preseason All-MAC pick and a first-team all-league back a year ago, Spann joined the long list of Northern Illinois 1,000-yard rushers with 1,038 yards on 179 carries. The Indianapolis native, a former walk-on, was most effective in the red zone as he scored 19 rushing touchdowns to lead the MAC and tie the NIU single season record for rushing scores. With a 79-yard touchdown run on the Huskies' first play from scrimmage versus North Dakota, Spann has scored 29 total touchdowns (28 rushing, 1 receiving) in 27 games over the last two seasons.

Spanning the Charts
Tailback Chad Spann leads the Mid-American Conference and ranks 25th in the country in rushing after adding a 140-yard, 21-carry effort against North Dakota to the 80 yards he picked up versus Iowa State. It was the fifth 100-yard day of Spann's career. With 1,748 career rushing yards on 316 carries, Spann has moved up to 18th on the Huskies' all-time rushing chart. He needs 252 yards to become just the 13th 2,000-yard rusher in school history. In addition, his average of 5.53 yards per carry ranks fourth all-time at NIU and is 15th among current active NCAA FBS players.

Harnessing Harnish
In his first start of the 2010 campaign, NIU junior quarterback Chandler Harnish could not be harnessed versus North Dakota. Harnish ran for a career-best 178 yards on 21 carries with career-long rushes of 40 and 38 yards in the game. He totaled the most rushing yards by a Northern Illinois quarterback in 20 years, since Huskie great Stacey Robinson ran for 308 yards versus Fresno State on Oct. 8, 1990. All-time, Robinson and Marshall Taylor are the only Northern Illinois quarterbacks to run for more yards in a game.

Teaming Up
Chandler Harnish and Chad Spann combined to rush for 318 yards on 42 carries to record the fifth-highest two-back total in school history. It was the most yards by a Northern Illinois duo in 15 years, since Charles Talley and Scott Florence went for a school-record 357 rushing yards in 1995. Harnish totaled 324 yards of total offense in the game while Spann had 160 all-purpose yards.

Familiar Place
The efforts of Harnish and Spann returned Northern Illinois to a familiar place in the MAC stats as the Huskies rank first in the league and 13th in the country in rushing offense. NIU is averaging 260 rushing yards per game while Spann and Harnish rank first and second in the Mid-American Conference, respectively, in individual rushing. Spann averaged almost 80 yards per game and was fourth in the MAC a year ago in rushing.

Divided Loyalty?
Northern Illinois senior safety Mike Sobol's older brother, Jeff, played defensive line at Illinois (but is not listed as a letterwinner), while fullback Pat McAvoy's uncle, Tim, was a three-year letterwinner for the Fighting Illini as a quarterback and tight end from 1979-81.

The Other Sideline
After spending the 2006 through 2009 seasons on the Illinois roster, and earning a letter as the Illini kick off man in 2007, Michael Cklamovski will find himself on the other sideline Saturday as a Huskie. Cklamovski is called "The Lawyer" by his Northern Illinois teammates as he transferred to NIU as a graduate student to attend law school after earning his undergraduate degree from Illinois in political science and communications in three-and-a-half years. Cklamovski has been effective on kickoffs for NIU so far this season, even forcing a fumble on a kickoff versus North Dakota. He will also handle any long field goal attempts for the Huskies.

High School Teammates Several players in this game will see some familiar faces and former high school teammates across the field Saturday, including NIU freshmen Mike Hellams (Bolingbrook HS/Bolingbrook, Ill.) and Da'Ron Brown (Morgan Park HS/Chicago, Ill.), redshirt freshman quarterback Jordan Lynch and defensive lineman Ron Newcomb (both Mt. Carmel HS/Chicago), sophomore safety/return man Tommy Davis (Althoff Catholic/East St. Louis, Ill.) and even Florida product Sean Evans (Ft. Walton Beach HS/Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.).

The Wilson Plan
NIU junior strong safety Tracy Wilson led Northern Illinois in tackles for the second straight game with a career high 13 tackles versus North Dakota. Wilson, who was the Huskies' leading tackler with 93 a year ago, made 10 stops, six solo, and his first career interception at Iowa State. The quarterback of the Huskie defense, Wilson has 23 tackles with half a tackle for loss so far in 2010.

Coffman Returns
One of the top recruits for NIU Head Coach Jerry Kill and recruiting coordinator/defensive line coach Jeff Phelps heading into this season was not a newcomer at all. After announcing his "retirement" from college football following the 2010 International Bowl, defensive end Jake Coffman came to Kill in May and asked if he could re-join the team. Coffman completed his bachelor's degree in the spring, but with the encouragement of his dad, decided to return to "finish" what he had started with the Huskie football team. The 26-year-old Marine Corps veteran brings, experience, leadership and proven credentials to the defensive line after leading the team with 13.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and five pass break ups to earn all-MAC honors last season.

A Senior with Class
Coffman's story, his commitment to not only the NIU football program but to his country and his community through volunteer efforts, has made him one of just 30 candidates for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The award, whose name stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, honors seniors who have achieved in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition. Last year, Coffman was honored as the 2009 Male Athlete of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Columbus.

Hidden Gems
Jerry Kill has continued an NIU tradition of turning non-scholarship players into contributors and starters with many of those players earning scholarships. Ten players on the Huskies' current depth chart, including starters Chad Spann (TB), Jason Schepler (TE), Jake Coffman (DE) and Sean Progar (DE) came to Northern Illinois as walk-ons. Key contributors Willie Clark (WR), Connor Flahive (FB), Jack Marks (TE) and Rashaan Melvin (CB) are also former walk-ons as are specialists Michael Cklamovski (K) and Ryan Neir (P).

Rehab Results
Senior safety Mike Sobol returned to the field versus Iowa State, just four months after surgery to repair a torn left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Sobol was allowed to practice on a limited basis three-and-a-half months after surgery and was given the "full go" two weeks later. He came back nearly two months sooner than "normal," according to NIU football trainer Kammy Powell. Sobol and Powell averaged two-plus hours of rehab per day and Powell attributed his early return to an impeccable work ethic and the fact that he did exactly what NIU athletic trainers and medical professionals advised. Sobol, a 20-game starter over the last two years, has four tackles on the season, with three versus Iowa State.

Krause Returns
In addition to Jake Coffman, Northern Illinois' defensive line has benefitted from the return of senior noseguard Mike Krause. Krause was forced to sit out the 2009 season due to a medical condition, but started all 13 games for the Huskies and made 20 tackles in 2008. He also continued working toward his career goals, as the business managment grad served an internship in the NIU Athletic Business Office over the summer. Coffman, Krause and senior defensive tackle D.J. Pirkle give NIU three seniors on the starting defensive line.

The Coach's Credentials
Northern Illinois has been a popular choice to win the MAC West Division by the pollsters this preseason as the Mid-American Conference Preseason Poll, USA Today, Athlon, Sporting News, CBS Sports.com, and Sports Illustrated, among others, have tabbed the Huskies as the MAC West favorites. The last time NIU was picked to win the West was in 2006 during Garrett Wolfe's senior season. The Huskies were also named as one of the top 50 teams in the country by Sporting News and Phil Steele's Magazine.

The Coach's Credentials
Prior to the 2010 season opener, Northern Illinois Head Coach Jerry Kill introduced the Huskies' 2010 Leadership Council, the group of players selected by the NIU team to serve as liaisons for the players to the coaching staff and perform additional leadership functions. Members of the Leadership Council for 2010 are: Jake Coffman (Sr., DE), Alex Kube (Sr., LB), Tracy Wilson (Jr., FS), Trevor Olson (Jr., OT), Ricky Crider (Sr., TB), Landon Cox (Sr., WR) and Jason Schepler (Jr., TE) along with all five Huskie quarterbacks - Jordan Lynch (Fr.), A.J. Hill (Fr.), Casey Weston (Jr.), Chandler Harnish (Jr.) and DeMarcus Grady (Jr.). Players in this group will serve as team captains during the Huskies' games this season.

Academic Achievement
NIU Head Coach Jerry Kill is justifiably proud of the academic accomplishments of his team, topped by the 50 football players who have earned their bachelor's degrees in the past two years under Kill. In addition, the football team's Academic Progress Rate (APR), the instrument used by the NCAA to measure the eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes, ranks tied for 10th in the country among NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools. NIU's 975 APR put it in elite company with schools like Air Force, Rice, Duke, Vanderbilt and Stanford.

Huskies in the NFL
As of Saturday, Sept. 4, there are six Huskies listed on NFL active rosters entering the 2010 season. The group is led by 2008 NIU senior Larry English, who became the highest NFL Draft choice in school history when he was selected with the 16th pick of the first round by the San Diego Chargers. English enters his second season in the league in 2010. He is joined by running backs Garrett Wolfe (Chicago Bears) and Michael Turner (Atlanta Falcons), offensive linemen Ryan Diem (Indianapolis Colts) and Doug Free (Dallas Cowboys), and receiver Sam Hurd (Dallas Cowboys). In addition, fullback/tight end Jake Nordin is listed on injured reserve for the Detroit Lions.

Youth is Served
Northern Illinois lists 25 freshmen and sophomores on its current depth chart on offense and defense with 16 on the defensive side of the ball. There are five first-year Huskies on the offensive two-deep - receiver Akeem Daniels, offensive linemen Matt Battaglia and Tyler Loos, and junior tailback Jasmin Hopkins. The NIU defensive depth chart includes seven 2010 newcomers, with four linebackers (Greg Barksdale, Jamaal Bass, Cameron Stingily, Mike Hellams), joined by defensive end Joe Windsor, and safety Jimmie Ward a. In addition to the newcomers, eight redshirt freshmen - four on offense and four on defense - are listed on the Huskies' two-deep.

New Huskies
Eleven players who had never seen action in a game for Northern Illinois before took the field versus Iowa State and four more NIU newcomers played in the North Dakota game. Versus Iowa State, the group included senior transfer Michael Cklamovski at kicker, junior college transfers Demetrius Stone and Jasmin Hopkins, true freshmen Jimmie Ward, Joe Windsor, Greg Barksdale, Akeem Daniels and Mathew Sims and redshirt freshmen Matt Krempel, Jared Volk and Stephen O'Neal. In the North Dakota game, the newcomers were defensive linemen Anthony Wells and Zach Anderson, and linebackers Mike Hellams and George Rainey.

Experience Counts
On the other end of the spectrum are eight Huskies who have played in 30-plus games for Northern Illinois, with senior long snapper Nolan Owen leading the list with 40 games played. Cornerback Patrick George, Landon Cox, Alex Kube and Chad Spann are next on the experience list with appearances in 38 games apiece. Tailback Ricky Crider (35), fullback Kyle Skarb (34) and defensive tackle D.J. Pirkle (34) are the other 30-game guys on the 2010 roster. Another six Huskies have played in 25 or more games.
