DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's basketball team fell to Akron Saturday afternoon at the NIU Convocation Center, 72-43.
The Zips used a 37-12 first half advantage to push to their third Mid-American Conference victory of the season. Behind 18 points and 13 rebounds from Rachel Tecca, the Zips improved to 10-12, 3-7 in MAC play while the Huskies dropped to 9-14, 3-7 in league action.
Senior Ebony Ellis led NIU with 16 points and eight rebounds. She went 7-16 from the field and made 2-of-3 free throw attempts.
"I thought Akron was incredibly prepared and did a great job against us," NIU head coach Kathi Bennett said. "We did not perform to the best of our ability, and I take total responsibility for that.
NIU shot just 28.3 percent from the field in the first half, and turned the ball over 15 times in the period. Akron took advantage, scoring 18 points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
"I think our lack of scoring affected our defense, and that's something we can change," Bennett said. "We can be really good defensively every single night."
While the Huskies allowed 51.7 percent shooting and were outrebounded 39-27, Bennett believes this type of performance is rare from her team.
"We kind of laid an egg," Bennett said. "I don't think that it is going to happen again."
NIU has six days without a game before playing Buffalo on the road, Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. Between now and then, Bennett believes her team can gain from this loss.
"(We've) got to learn from it," Bennett said. "It definitely was a humbling experience, and I think if we take it like that, we are going to learn from it."
