Huskie Bats Stay Hot

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Northern Illinois University softball team scored in double digits for the second straight game, scoring a 13-5 victory over Santa Clara Saturday afternoon at the Colorado State Classic hosted by Colorado State.

The Huskies (5-8) had five players post a multi-hit game. For the second-straight game it was NIU's Nos. 3 and 4 hitters with Stephanie Tofft (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) leading the way going 2-for-2, with four RBIs and three runs scored and Zoe Sinner (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) went 2-for-3 two RBIs and two runs scored. Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Orland Park) was also a catalyst to the Huskie office in the two hole going 2-for-4 with three runs and a RBI.

Santa Clara jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four spot in the first inning. However, Northern Illinois responded with two runs in the first and five in the second, including a two-run homer by Tofft, to take a 7-4 lead.

Whitney Owens (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights), who came in to relieve starter Nicole Gremillion (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins) in the second inning, shut down the Broncos allowing one run on five hits to pick up the victory. NIU salted the game away with six runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 13-4.

The Huskies' second game with Colorado State was postponed after three and a half innings due to darkness with the Rams leading, 5-2. The game will resume after NIU's game versus Santa Clara tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
