DeKALB, Ill. - Coming off a pair of wins in its opening weekend, the Northern Illinois men's tennis team will return to action for a contest at No. 27 Indiana Sunday Feb. 5. The match will begin at 5 p.m. central time and can followed live at IUHoosiers.com.
The Huskies won both of their matches in Rockford, Ill. at Boylan Tennis Center against Division III power UW-Whitewater and Butler Jan. 27. NIU opened with a matinee against the Warhawks and took the doubles point by winning at Nos. 2 and 3 and swept singles to win the contest 7-0. Freshmen Dor Amir (No. 3) and Frederic Cadieux (No. 6) won their first collegiate matches versus Whitewater.
Later in the afternoon, Northern Illinois met Horizon League foe Butler and unlike the UW-Whitewater, found themselves in a hole after dropping two-of-three doubles matches. Nos 2 through 6 won the rest of the matches to will the Huskies past the Bulldogs, 5-2.
The contest with BU saw the return of Mikhail Titov to Huskies singles lineup (No. 5). Titov missed the 2011 season with injury and was forced to redshirt and in his return, triumphed 6-2, 6-4. Titov was in the doubles lineup with Roman Turtygin and fell at No. 1 in both matches.
The Hoosiers are undefeated at home this season (2-0) with a pair of 7-0 wins over Mid-American Conference foes Western Michigan and Toledo. Indiana's only losses have come at the hands of No. 7 Kentucky (7-0) and No. 3 Ohio State (4-0). IU will be hosting No. 73 Harvard Feb. 4 and No. 36 Vanderbilt Feb. 5 at noon.
Sophomore Axel Lagerlof, the reigning MAC Newcomer of the Year, and his doubles partner Amir are the lone Huskies to own a perfect 4-0 record in singles and doubles this season. Cadieux and Maximilian Phillips are both 2-0 in singles play this season.
Following the showdown with Indiana, the Huskies will return to action for a pair of matches Feb. 10 in Rockford against IPFW and SIU-Edwardsville at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
