SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championship this weekend at the University of Notre Dame. The Huskies were unable to pick up a victory in the main draw of either the singles of the double competition.

In the qualifying draw, junior Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe), fell in his first match against Northwestern’s Jason Seidman, 6-3, 6-3. In the consolation matches, Manzanas defeated William Malm of Cleveland State, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.

Three Huskies were placed in the main draw singles. Senior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) fell to Ben Van Dixhorn of Northwestern in a three-set match, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3, while sophomores Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) and Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) each dropped straight set matches in the first round. Hamel was defeated by Joe VanMeter of Cleveland State, 6-4, 7-5, while Hjertonsson fell, 6-4, 6-4, to seventh-seeded Jeffrey Schorsch of Valparaiso

In the doubles, the Huskies fell in a pair of close matches. Hjertonsson and Manzanas were edged, 8-6, by Patryk Koscielski and Nicholas Solarewicz of Detroit while Formont and Hamel dropped a very tight 8-7 (3) result to Andre Romanello and Gleb Sklyr of Marquette.

The Huskies will conclude fall play at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Oct. 30-31, in Kalamazoo, Mich.
