NIU-SEMO Final Results
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - A week after tying the school record for the highest score in school history, the Northern Illinois University women's gymnastics team recorded the second-highest score in its win over Southeast Missouri State at Houck Field House Friday night.
"These kids believe in what they can do and they're not afraid to get after it," said NIU head coach Sam Morreale. "It's just a testament to the work they put in every day to put them in the best position to compete."
NIU (8-2, 3-1) scored a 195.400-193.300 victory over the Redhawks, turning in season high on the balance beam with a 48.925 which ranks ninth all-time in school history.
"Props to the beam squad for going last and scoring the highest event score of the day," he said.
The Huskies turned in their second-highest score on the vault this season with a 48.850 and their 48.825 on the floor in NIU's third-highest score in 2015. The Huskies added a 48.800 on the uneven parallel bars.
"It was pretty awesome to see 48.800's everywhere," Morreale said. "It was a pretty solid `team' effort. It's not like one event carried us. Everyone got it done."
Amanda Stepp, Jamyra Carter and Courtney Dowdell all won events. Stepp took first on the beam with a career and team-high 9.875 and on the vault with a 9.850, also a career best. Carter won her second straight bars event with a 9.825, while Dowdell won her first event of the season with a 9.825 on the floor exercise.
Brittany Wenzel came in second on the floor with a 9.800, while Kelly Nortz took fourth with a 9.750. Meg Piepenbrink finished in fourth on the bars with a 9.775. Jaelyn Olsen took third on the beam with a 9.775.
Freshmen Ashley Potts and Andie Van Voorhis continued to post solid routines. Potts finished second on the bars with a 9.800, tying her career-high, and on the beam with a 9.800. She also took fifth on the vault with a 9.750. Van Voorhis took third on the vault with a 9.800 and fifth on the beam with a 9.750.
